TRULY ROCKS ON

This article had started forming itself in my head just after the movie. The new Farhan Akhtar flick truly rocks.

The story weaves in and out of the past of four friends – who were a rock band. They fall apart because of some differences (won’t reveal it here. That’s the “kahani-ka-twist”). They then tread on the courses of their individual careers – investment banking, jewelry and music. They pull off success. Ten years later their paths cross again. And they set out to recreate their old magic with the unconventional music. The moral of the story is – don’t give up on your dreams. Not pursuing one’s passion professionally doesn’t necessarily deprive one of success. But it does deprive one the highs from such accomplishments.

But, God is in the details. The movie is wonderfully made. A young look, a fresh feel, unorthodox music (trust Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to come up with this!), strong character sketching, super cinematography, and great editing. (No ugly scenes. Even sad bits are well narrated sans the melodrama.) All this would have been incomplete without the stellar performances of all the actors. Nothing was overdone. No scripted humor, no depressing sorrows, no failed marriages, no crying-over-spilt-milk, no yeh-dosti-hum-nahi-todenge business. Every expression was well-timed, every dialog was well delivered.

It’s about dreams, music and passion. It’s about solidarity, individuality, successes, rotten failures. It is about walking out on each other and about coming back to each other. It is about giving in to the ‘inner-calling’ and about making compromises sometimes. It is about the glamour and stark realities. It is about talent and acumen. It’s about having fun and belonging to a team. It’s about friends, love and trust. It is about grabbing the opportunities that life gives us. It’s about living.

And it doesn’t end there. The movie is a fruition of the efforts behind it. It is a lesson for today's movie makers.
